چکیده

In this paper, we present a novel two-step, variational and feature preserving smoothing method for terrain data. The first step computes the field of 3D normal vectors from the height map and smoothes them by minimizing a robust penalty function of curvature. This penalty function favors piecewise planar surfaces; therefore, it is better suited for processing terrain data then previous methods which operate on intensity images. We formulate the total curvature of a height map as a function of its normals. Then, the gradient descent minimization is implemented with a second-order partial differential equation (PDE) on the field of normals. For the second step, we define another penalty function that measures the mismatch between the the 3D normals of a height map model and the field of smoothed normals from the first step. Then, starting with the original height map as the initialization, we fit a non-parametric terrain model to the smoothed normals minimizing this penalty function. This gradient descent minimization is also implemented with a second-order PDE. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach with a ridge/gully detection application.

Simultaneous Smoothing & Estimation of DTI via Robust Variational Non-local Means

Regularized diffusion tensor estimation is an essential step in DTI analysis. There are many methods proposed in literature for this task but most of them are neither statistically robust nor feature preserving denoising techniques that can simultaneously estimate symmetric positive definite (SPD) diffusion tensors from diffusion MRI. One of the most popular techniques in recent times for featu...

A robust variational approach for simultaneous smoothing and estimation of DTI

Estimating diffusion tensors is an essential step in many applications - such as diffusion tensor image (DTI) registration, segmentation and fiber tractography. Most of the methods proposed in the literature for this task are not simultaneously statistically robust and feature preserving techniques. In this paper, we propose a novel and robust variational framework for simultaneous smoothing an...

Feature Preserving Smoothing of 3D Surface Scans

With the increasing use of geometry scanners to create 3D models, there is a rising need for effective denoising of data captured with these devices. This thesis presents new methods for smoothing scanned data, based on extensions of the bilateral filter to 3D. The bilateral filter is a non-linear, edge-preserving image filter; its extension to 3D leads to an efficient, feature preserving filte...

Artificial Immune Systems (AIS) can be defined as soft computing systems inspired by immune system of vertebrates. Immune system is an adaptive pattern recognition system. AIS have been used in pattern recognition, machine learning, optimization and clustering. Feature reduction refers to the problem of selecting those input features that are most predictive of a given outcome; a problem encoun...

Edge-preserving Smoothing of High-resolution Images with a Partial Multifractal Reconstruction Scheme

The new generation of satellites leads to the arrival of very high-resolution images which offer a new quality of detailed information about the Earth’s surface. However, the exploitation of such data becomes more complicated and less efficient as a consequence of the great heterogeneity of the objects displayed. In this paper, we address the problem of edgepreserving smoothing of high-resoluti...
